Review

Anub'arak is the fifth and final boss of ToS/ToGK. After killing the Twin Valkyries, the floor of the coliseum collapses and the raid falls into the Frozen Depths, where the former king Azjol-Neruba awaits. The battle is cyclical: the boss alternates the ground phase (stands, hits the tank and places pillboxes on the raid, summons adds) with the underground phase (burrows in and chases a random target with overtaking spikes), and at 30% launches a sucking swarm and remains at the top until death. The key to combat is the placement of Permafrost spots from Frost Orbs.

General tips
  • Take care of cooldowns and growth/bloodlast for the 3rd phase - this is the storm phase.
  • Spikes and Permafrost cancel each other out: stand on the snow or throw spikes into the snow.
  • In the 3rd phase, the raid is kept at low HP (40-50%), otherwise the sucking swarm heals the boss more strongly.
  • Before going underground, pull the boss to the edge of the room to give the raid time to win back the spikes.

Combat phases

Phase 1 Phase 1 - Above Ground Start of battle, cycle up to 30% HP

The boss stands and hits the tankFreezing Lunge and hangsPenetrating coldto the raid. Summons Scarabs (neutral) and Nerubian Earthswallowers (dangerous adds), which OT keeps on spotsPermafrost, so that they don't get buried. Damage to the boss occurs only in this phase.

  • Freezing Lunge by tank
  • Penetrating coldfor 5 goals
  • Nerubian Earthswallowers in the Snow
  • DD is gripped/shot Frost spheres for permafrost
Phase 2 Phase 2 - Underground / Overtaking Spikes (Intermission) Approximately 2 minutes after the start of phase 1, cyclically

The boss burrows (Permafrostdoes not prevent burying) and chasesOvertaking spikes behind a random target - the line of spikes accelerates, the leading spike hits ~18-20k without armor. The scarabs become hostile and place a stacking pillbox. You cannot bury the boss during this phase; damage does not go through him. Lasts about a minute, after which the boss emerges and phase 1 begins again.

  • StalkingOvertaking spikes
  • Kite spikes inPermafrost to change target
  • Hostile Swarm Scarabs
  • BoP for the target of pursuit
Phase 3 Phase 3 - Sucking Swarm (30%) 30% HP

The boss stays on top forever and launches a swarm that drains 10% (hardmode - 20-30%) of the entire raid's current health per second, healing from this damage. On normal, new earthswallowers are not summoned; on hardmode they continue. Heals keep the raid at a minimum safe HP, heal only tanks and carriersPenetrating cold. Burn to death.

  • Draining Swarm (% of current HP)
  • The boss is cured from the drain
  • Heal only tanks andPenetrating cold
  • Bloodlast/Growth and all cooldowns

Abilities

Freezing Lunge
Tank F.1
Deals ~25% damage from an ice strike to the main target (according to Russian sources ~7500) and stuns the tank for 3 seconds. Not resistant, reduced by %, resistance and armor; can be removed by BoF/unbinding.
Action: Tank keep survival cooldowns ready; heal the tank before the rollback (~21-24 sec).
Penetrating cold
Debuff
Dot for 5 random players: ~3500 (25 players: ~6000) ice damage every 3 sec for 18 sec. It is cast every ~18 sec, so the debuff almost always hangs on someone. In the 3rd phase, he is especially dangerous in conjunction with a swarm.
Action: Hilams have a priority to heal carriers; in the 3rd phase, drown them, keep the rest low. You can go under the Frost Protection Potion.
Overtaking Thorns
Raid damage F.2
Marks the target with the Anub'arak Pursuit effect and launches a line of spikes that accelerates (75% of the run or faster) and spawns new spikes ahead. The spikes hit 2828-3172 at everyone within 4m, the leading spike hits 14138-15862 (25 players: 17672-19828) with fisuron, ignoring armor. The target changes when it dies or when spikes enter the Permafrost.
Action: Kite the boss towards the snow and at the last moment go into the frozen ground (reset/change target). The target can be given BoP - immunity to fisuron. Never get between the spikes and a tagged player.
You are being pursued by Anub'arak
Debuff F.2
Mark on a random player followed by Overtaking Spikes. The longer it hangs on one target, the faster the spikes. It can only be removed by planting thorns in a spot of permafrost.
Action: The marked one should kite along the snow, take time (the first one is for as long as possible, saving permafrost), then go onto the snow.
Permafrost
Other
Appears under a killed Frost Sphere: a circle with a ~10 m radius, slows down everyone on it by 30% (hardmode - 80%) and prevents Nerubian Earthswallowers from burrowing. The permafrost that the Overtaking Spikes hit disappears along with the spikes.
Action: DDs (especially Death Grip DKs) drop orbs on the sides of the boss; Earthswallowers are tanked on these spots. Don't waste starting spots on winning back spikes.
Corpse-eating beetles
Raid damage F.3
Passive aura with 30%: drains 10% (10HC: 20%, 25HC: 30%) of each target's current health per second, minimum 250. Damage removed heals the boss 1:1. Resistant to Nature Resistance Totem/Aspect of the Wild.
Action: Heal DO NOT AoE heal: keep the raid at 40-50% and below, drown only tanks and Piercing Cold. All bursts and Bloodlast go here.
Dive
Other F.1
The boss burrows underground and enters phase 2. Parking on Permafrost does NOT prevent immersion. Nerubian Earthswallowers use the same ability (to reset aggro), but they cannot bury themselves in the snow.
Action: Before diving, pull the boss to the wall; finish off the adds until they go underground.
Spider Frenzy
Other
Nerubian Earthswallowers buff: +100% to movement, attack and cast speed for every other Earthswallower within a 12 m radius. At 25 they spawn in pairs/4s, so they are bred.
Action: Keep earthswallowers >12 m apart from each other.
Determination
Other F.2
Swarm Scarabs periodically gain immunity to slows and +100% movement speed as they begin to chase the raid. Hang a stacking poison pillbox (Poisonous mandibles, up to 99 stacks).
Action: Aoesh/kite Scarabs quickly and don't let them fill DoT stacks.
Shadow Strike
Debuff HC
Hardmode only. Nerubian earthswallowers cast a blow on a random target for ~8 sec for 40,000 dark damage - be sure to knock it down with a kick/stun (the paladin's Wrath of Heaven hits everyone at once). Confirmed: spell=66134, Darkness school, Earthswallow NPC ability.
Action: Assign interrupts; paladin to stand between stacks of earthswallowers and become the Wrath of Heaven.

Positioning

The boss is tanked at the spawn point, the raid is loosely stacked behind Anub'arak (he has a frontal cone AoE). Two OTs flank the boss, each holding their own group of Earthswallowers on their own patch of Permafrost. In phase 2, many stack DPS in the center in order to conveniently aoesh Scarabs, and the one marked with spikes kites along the edge along the snow.

🛡 Tank
MT keeps the boss facing away from the raid at the starting point, turns the cone away from the pack. Before diving, he pulls towards the wall.
✨ Healer
Heals behind the boss. In phase 1-2, normal healing + priority of Piercing Cold. On the 3rd - reverse: only tanks and pillbox carriers are sunk, the rest of the raid is kept low (disc-priest on shields/quick response is ideal).
⚔DD
Miles and part of the range on the boss, the allocated range knocks Frost Spheres under the frozen ground. Earthswallowers are a priority in phase 1 (cleave with the boss), Scarabs are a priority in phase 2.

Role Tips

🛡 Tips for the tank
  • An add tank is better than a paladin/war (blocking mechanics and Critical block sharply reduce the damage from stacking Reveal Weakness).
  • Breed earthswallowers >12 m to preventSpider rabies.
  • On hardmode, strictly knock downShadow Strike stuns/kicks.
✨ Tips for healer
  • In the 3rd phase, no AoE healing - otherwise you will heal the boss; keep the raid at 40-50%.
  • Drown the carriersPenetrating cold:in conjunction with a swarm, one tick can kill.
  • Offhill (Shaman's Healing Stream, Vampiric Embrace sp) is what you need in the storm phase.
⚔ DD Tips
  • Cleve is your best friend: beat the earthswallowers without losing damage to the boss.
  • DKs release Frost Spheres with a Death Grip on the sides of the boss; Don't waste starting spots on spikes.
  • Save cooldowns and personal-defensive for phase 3; Bloodlast by ~30% (or a little earlier if the boss is about to burrow).
