Review

General Vezax is the penultimate boss of Ulduar, the guardian on the path to Yogg-Saron. His trick is mana. The aura of despair almost completely disables mana regen for the entire raid, so the entire fight is about resource management. The only sources of mana are green pools from killed Saronite Vapors (life → mana, damage doubles every 2 sec) and purple pools from Dark Crush (−75% to spell cost). The tank is constantly under threat: Searing Flames (−75% armor, must be interrupted) and Surge of Darkness (+100% physical damage once per minute). Range runs away from Dark Crush's projectiles and takes the Mark of the Faceless One away from the raid. Hardmode is unique: it is turned on without touching the Saronite pairs - then they merge into the Saronite animus, which puts a Saronite barrier on Vezax (−99% damage). The boss has no phases in the usual sense - the entire fight is one flow of mechanics with mana management.

General tips
  • The aura of despair almost completely disables mana regen. Heals don't blindly spam, DPS casters save mana and live on purple pools of Dark Crush.
  • The burning flame on the tank MUST always be interrupted: 13875–16125 fire on the raid + −75% tank armor for 10 sec = almost guaranteed wipe/death of the tank. Assign interrupt rotation.
  • A surge of Darkness every ~63 sec gives Vezax +100% physical damage for 10 sec - the tank maintains a protective CD (personal or external) for each.
  • Dark Crush flies to the farthest one and explodes at the landing point (11310–12690 darkness, 10 m). The point is selected at the beginning of the flight - have time to move away. The purple puddle provides +100% magic damage, +100% casting speed, -75% mana cost, but also -75% healing.
  • The Faceless Mark on the far side drains 5000 HP/sec from neighbors and heals Vezax - immediately run away from the raid (dashes/sprints). Keep a healing debuff on the boss (Deathblow, etc.).
  • Saronite pairs appear once every 30 sec; killed steam produces a green puddle (life → mana). Damage and mana double every 2 seconds in a puddle - don’t get more than ~5 stacks, slow down between runs.
  • Hardmode: DO NOT touch Saronite pairs. When six vapors accumulate (on AzerothCore; eight on retail), they will merge into the Saronite Animus. He puts a Saronite barrier on Vezax (−99% damage) - transfer all DPS to Animus, remove the barrier, then finish off Vezax.

Combat phases

Phase 1 Combat - mana management Vezax Pool

The only combat phase. Vezax immediately hangsAura of despair (no mana regen, −20% attack speed per melee). In a circle they go:Dark Crush at long range (dodge, stand in purple puddles for cheap spells),Searing Flame on the tank (interrupt!),Splash of Darkness (+100% physical damage, tank CD),Mark of the Faceless One (take away from the raid). Spawns every 30 secondsSaronite pairs - a source of mana through green puddles. Kill the boss before 10 minutesBerserker.

  • InterruptSearing flame
  • EvadingDark Crush + purple puddles
  • Tank-kd underSplash of Darkness
  • EntrainmentMarks of the Faceless One
  • Mana from green puddles in doses
Phase 2 Hardmode - Saronite Animus Don't kill Saronite Pairs (accumulate six)

If you do not touch the pairs, having accumulated to six (AzerothCore; retail - eight), they merge into the Saronite animus. He instantly puts a Saronite Barrier on Vezax (−99% of damage taken) and hits hard himself, requiring a second tank, and also casts Dive into Darkness (750 darkness for everyone, +10% for each cast). All DPS is on the Animus under all CDs to quickly remove the barrier. At the same time, Vezax continuesSearing Flame/Splash Darkness - don't let go of interruptions. Killing the Animus removes the barrier and provides hardmode loot; but without puddles of vapor, the entire battle goes on without any regen mana at all - only on purple puddlesDark destruction.

  • Do not attack couples (otherwise hardmode is unavailable)
  • Second tank for Animus
  • Burst on the Animus to remove the obstacle
  • Plunge into Darkness - Increasing Raid Damage
  • The whole fight is without mana fumes

Abilities

Aura of despair
Other F.1
Entire fight: Almost completely disables mana regeneration from natural sources (Viper Spirit, Wise Judgment, Shaman's Wrath and Spiritual Attunement remain partially effective). Attack speed in miles -20%.
Action: Main combat mechanics. Heals and casters save mana: live on purple pools of Dark Crush (−75% cost) and green pools of vapor. Don't spam blindly.
Dark Crush
Raid damage F.1
Random ranged projectile (>15m): at landing point, 11310–12690 dark damage in a 10m radius + knockback. Leaves a purple puddle with the buff: +100% magic damage, +100% casting speed, -75% mana cost, but -75% healing.
Action: The point is selected at the beginning of the flight - move away. DPS casters stand in a purple puddle (the only way to deal damage without draining mana). The heal buff is harmful (−75% healing) - they don’t need the puddle. Break the range into groups so more people can hold the puddle without running away.
Searing Flame
Tank F.1
Cast for 2 sec on target: 13875–16125 fire damage to the entire raid + heats up the tank’s armor, reducing defense by 75% for 10 sec. Every ~8 sec (25) / ~15 sec (10).
Action: ABORT always - no cast should pass. Assign strict interrupt rotation. Missed cast = burst of fire across the raid and -75% tank armor, almost guaranteed death.
Splash of Darkness
Tank F.1
Every ~63 sec: Vezax gains +100% physical damage for 10 sec (and -55% movement speed).
Action: The tank maintains a protective CD (personal or external) for each Burst. The healers are ready to re-heal the tank for these 10 seconds.
Mark of the Faceless One
Raid damage F.1
On a random ranged one: for 10 sec, drains 5000 HP/sec from SURROUNDING allies and heals Vezax with this.
Action: The marked person immediately runs away from everyone (dash/sprint/blink), without running into other groups. Keep a healing reduction debuff (Deadly Strike) on Vezax to cut off this self-healing.
Summon Saronite Vapors
Other F.1
Once every 30 sec a cloud of vapor with low HP will spawn. When killed, it leaves a green puddle: those standing in it convert life into mana. Damage and mana received doubles every 2 sec in a puddle (100·2^stack).
Action: The only regular source of mana. Enter the puddle in doses, not gaining more than ~5 stacks (the damage doubles and will kill), exit - the stacks are reset. Dance in and out. ATTENTION: for hardmode, the pairs CANNOT be touched.
Saronite Barrier
Other F.2 HC
Hardmode. If you do not kill the pairs, the six accumulated (AzerothCore; retail - eight) merge into the Saronite Animus. He places a Saronite Barrier on Vezax (−99% damage taken) and casts Dive into Darkness: 750 darkness to everyone + 10% dark damage per cast.
Action: The second tank picks up the Animus (casters should keep the threat reset - it’s easy to overwhelm on a fresh add under the purple puddle buff). All DPS and all CD are on the Animus, remove the barrier and return to Vezax. Do not let go of interrupting the Searing Flame. The entire hardmode runs without mana vapor—only purple puddles.
Berserk
Berserk F.1
Hard Berserk in 10 minutes.
Action: Manage your mana to keep it within 10 minutes. In hardmode, the time to remove the Animus barrier eats up part of the DPS window - don’t delay it.

Positioning

The tank holds Vezax in place, facing away from the raid. Miles under the boss. Range and heals are spread out around the hall in groups: this way, fewer people are affected by Dark Crush and Mark of the Faceless One, but at the same time, DPS casters can share the purple puddles. Don't stand in a bunch - Mark and Crush hit the area.

🛡 Tank
The main tank on Vezax: interruptions of the Searing Flame are a priority, protective CD for each Burst of Darkness, rehealing at -75% armor if the flame still passes. In Hardmode, the second tank keeps the Saronite Animus at a distance.
✨ Healer
Mana is the main resource. Don't spam: The aura of despair almost removes the regen. Dose the treatment, use the green puddles of vapor carefully (they hit). Do not stand in the purple pools of Destruction - there is -75% healing. Peaks: Searing Flame (if passed), Splash of Darkness on the tank, Mark of the Faceless One.
⚔DD
Casters live in purple pools of Dark Crush (−75% cost). The miles tick steadily, following the Splash. Everyone is watching the Saronite pairs: in normal mode - kill for mana, in hard mode - do not touch. Keep a debuff on −healing against self-healing from the Mark.

Role Tips

🛡 Tips for the tank
  • InterruptSearing flame most importantly, not a single cast should pass.
  • Defensive CD for eachSplash of Darkness (once every ~minute, +100% physical damage for 10 sec).
  • If the flame passes, you are under −75% armor for 10 sec, call for rehealing and cooldown.
  • In hardmode, the second tank immediately picks up the Saronite animus, keeping it separate from Vezax.
✨ Tips for healer
  • Aura of despair almost disables regen - dose the treatment, don’t spam.
  • Green puddles of vapor give mana, but they hit you progressively - go in short runs.
  • Don't heal from the purple pool of Destruction: there is -75% healing.
  • Prepare peaks forSplash of Darkness (tank) andMark of the Faceless One (carrying away the distant one).
⚔ DD Tips
  • Casters stand in purple puddlesDark Crush - otherwise the mana will run out.
  • Break up into ranged groups to share the puddles and not all run away from the Crush at once.
  • Keep a debuff on Vezax to reduce healing -Mark of the Faceless One he is being treated.
  • Hardmode: DO NOT attackSaronite pairs under no circumstances, otherwise the regime will collapse.
  • In hardmode, burst on the Animus under all cooldowns to quickly remove the Saronite barrier.
